RIP Cabernet “Cabby”
Whether you loved her or not, she definitely has left her mark (sometimes more visible than others) on everyone she came in contact with. This sprite little 15/16 yo has been a part of our lives for 13/14 years, and time is finally catching up with her. That time with us and Merle came to a close earlier. ?
Her little body had decided it’s time and after a lot of talking, tears, and more talking through tears, we decided to say our goodbye in our home. The pain she is going through and the deterioration of her body has really impacted her quality of life, and while we know it is never the right time, Chris and I knew that the time was upon us.
Anyone who knows us understands we would do absolutely anything to prolong more time with any of our loved furry family members. We realized this morning while at the Vet’s office that that option really isn’t available to us anymore.
Our hearts are breaking and I know it won’t be easy for either of us, but how we feel will pale in comparison to how Merle will feel. He will be losing his idol, his sister, his tormentor and his best friend. We made the decision for Merle to be present when Cabby crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and time will tell if this will be the right thing or not.
He has known something was wrong with his sister and there were times when I believe he was trying to make it right for her, without fully understanding that he simply can’t fix it. We couldn’t fix this, we just hopefully had to make the right decision based on what we knew and focus on the best quality of life for our little girl.
I’m sharing this now because life really does suck for us today and it will probably continue to for the next few days. We spent the day into the evening giving Cabby (and Merle) as much love as we could and spoiling them as much as they could handle.
It is the most surreal feeling to be sitting here knowing that the little brown dog that has sat by our side for all those years, won’t be sleeping with us tonight. Remember to love your furry family members and cherish every hour of every day with them; and tonight, keep us in your thoughts as we say goodbye. ?
