Caribbean Adventure Tour 23 to 29 August 1999

    Day 1 – Departing Dallas

We managed to get to the airport on time, actually with plenty of time to spare! The sun was shining in a regularly warm Dallas, however when we finally arrived in Miami, the rain was drenching the airport, that along with the lightning, required us to be grounded before disembarking for about 45 minutes. Naturally we were an hour late taking off. Both of us were just wishing we were there. Side-note. Don’t stay up all night prior to flying.

    ANTIGUA

The cab ride from airport was AMAZING. Fast and maniacal, is the only way I can describe it. At one point we stopped for gas, or so we thought, he (the driver) was checking out the petrol pump attendant. I think this should have been a warning about the way life is on the islands. Hotel is nice. Greeted by Karen – the handshake is a nice touch. She arranged for sandwiches. These are hospitable people. Seems this island is liked by the british, as we have heard many already. The crickets are also amazing here, as they sound like a birds tweeting constantly, or like a spring in need of an oil. The room is basic – no air conditioning, but it is about 30 feet from the ocean. As I write this I am listening to the rolling waves pounding the beach, with the sounds of the crickets ‘chirping’ away.

    Day 2

Up at 6.41 this morning. Wandered to the clothing optional part of the beach and took advantage of the solitude and the camera. Also managed to get this great shot (to the left) with the blue waters of the Caribbean sea just metres from our room. Got to the airport, where our plane was delayed for over an hour. Got to St Martin – part of the Netherlands – and then drove over to the French part of the island. Yep 2 countries on the one island. Took the ferry to Anguilla – the water here HAS to be seen to be believed. Hotel is great – except they seem to have a problem with 2 men. Given this was a prize given to the HRC, it is a little odd. Prices seem extraordinary – still trying to figure out if they are EC or US. Napped the afternoon away – after finally getting our room. After dinner we wandered along the moon lit beach and relaxed in a hammock.

    Day 3

After a good sleep, wandered down to the beach and soaked up some sun and frollicked in the warm Caribbean sea. Decided to wander to Gee Wee’s bakery for lunch. The food – a turkey sandwich – was fresh and tasty. I suggest you skip the ‘local’ drink called Moaby – or something, we discovered it was made from tree bark (we kid you not!). Ventured to another hotel to buy some stuff at their ‘shop’ – but it was closed. Walked back to the Sonesta – having walked about 6 miles. Hot and sweaty, we immediately moved to the beach for a cool down in the water. The tan line is starting to look good *laff*. Ate at the hotel restaurant, it is very expensive unfortunately.

    Day 4

We are sleeping late – and neither of us are really sure why. Maybe the warm air and the lazy attitude. Today we decided than rather hiring bicycles, we would investigate hiring a car. The economics have paid off as we now have this new found freedom. We drove over to Shoal Bay today, which is meant to be the ‘nicest’ beach on Anguilla. It’s pretty and lots of coral around, but the sand is coarser. We met a guy named Raymond, who asked if we were from the Sonesta – we decided it was the towels that gave us away. His sister is the assistant manager at the Sonesta, and he provides beach stuff. He gave us his card proudly annuouncing he was ‘on the internet’. We didn’t use his service, but thought he was worth a mention. We lazed at Shoal Bay for a couple of hours, and then visited the market for food items (another benefit to having the vehicle). Later we ate at the World Famous “Smitty’s”, which is an interesting establishment and interesting food. I started my transformation into a real man at Smitty’s. After returning to the hotel, we did coffee and then watched the night roll by whilst laying in a hammock on the beach. I think we solved all the world’s problems out there.

    Day 5

The tan is coming along nicely. Today we visited Sandy Island, which is about 2 miles off the Anguillan coast. The island used to be covered with palm trees, however these were destroyed five years ago in Hurricane ??. Being low season we were the only people on the island (about 100 foot by 30 foot). Very relaxing with the sound of water lapping the beach on all sides. The water varies in colour, from a deep deep blue to a brilliant torquoise. Simply stunning. We ate lunch there and watched a squall pass by in the distance, with our little island remaining sunny at all times. The company that provides the ride and lunch are a family run business. The cost was a little more than expected – make sure you ask – with the trip, lunch and a couple of drinks costing about $69.00. The rest of the afternoon we spent relaxing at the hotel. Dinner was eaten at Arlo’s – a french/italian place. After ringing to confirm they were open, we arrived to find that they were closing the next day, so their menu selection was limited. Chris and I returned to the hotel and played Checkers and Chess under the watchful eye of the barmen. Followed by the obligatory hammock watch. My journey to manhood is almost complete.

    Day 6

Today was a quiet day. We lounged on the beach for a few hours in the morning, did a lunch from Gee Wee’s and then napped at the hotel. We ate dinner at Top of the Palms, a restaurant attached to the La Sirena hotel. Chris wanted Fondue, however they were only serving the “west indian” style and not the swiss cheese style. Both of us were a little disappointed, but enjoyed the food we did eat. Back to the hotel where a rematch for chess was requested. The outcomes did not change. Chris thought it would be cool to go for a swim, but the ocean was dragging all this grass in, so we remained clothed and dry. Well…

    Day 7

Today is the last day here. We are planning to soak more sun, pack and leave. Both of us have enjoyed ourselves a lot.

  • Texas Tales – August 1999

Most of August has been spent in Frisco (Dallas).

Have seen a few movies this month, which have been awesome.

    Edge of Seventeen
    Yahoo Movies: http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/guide/edge_of_seventeen.html
    Official Site: http://www.strandrel.com/comingsoon/edgeof.html

A US gay related film, about a boy growing up. Very good!

    Get Real
    Yahoo Movies: http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/guide/get_real.html
    Official Site: http://www.paramountclassics.com/getreal/index.html

A British gay related film, about a boy who likes sex with other boyz / men. This is very funny, and very very good!!

    The Sixth Sense
    Yahoo Movies: http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/guide/the_sixth_sense.html
    Official Site: http://movies.go.com/sixthsense/index.html

The new Bruce Willis movie (collective sigh, I know). Actually this is brilliant and has “won” the box office takings 2 weekends in a row. The acting is superb, especially by the child actor (Haley Joel Osment). It has its moments where I grabbed the seat or the nearest leg, but the “twist” at the end is spectacular 🙂

    Trick
    Yahoo Movies: http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/guide/trick.html
    Official Site: http://www.trickmovie.com

This is the new film with Tori Spelling in it (woo hoo, I hear you all say). A new gay film – there are a few aren’t there – about a boy who mets a guy (a dancer) and their attempts to find a place to have sex. It is a funny film, and some of the lines in it are magical. Look out for the toilet scene with Miss Coco Peru :-)) Lots of eye candy in this film 🙂 Oh did I mention it has Christian Campbell in it :-))

    23 to 29 August
Chris and I visited the Caribbean for a week Details are on my Caribbean Adventure Page.

  • Texas Tales – July 1999

    4 July
    Independence Day!

    8 July
Scottsbluff and Gering have the Oregon Trails Festival this weekend, so we have to move out of our hotel for the weekend. We have a hotel in Alliance, Nebraska which is about 47 miles north-east of Scottsbluff. It will mean that Chris has to leave at a more ungodly hourly to get to work now – oh well,it’s only two days 🙂

    9 July
Today was Chris’s first day off, so we heading to South Dakota to the Mount Rushmore National Monument. We also visited Deadwood, South Dakota, which is a whole town listed as a National Historic Landmark, and the burial place of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

    11 July
Today we headed back to Scottsbluff to our new hotel – Best Western, Scottsbluff Inn. Gee this is exciting no?!?

About to leave Scottsbluff, and Chris gets a page. We are off to Minot, North Dakota!

Details on Minot will be forthcoming. A word of advice, don’t hold your breath for excitement 😉

  • Texas Tales – June 1999

    15 to 20 June
    Key West, Florida.

After flying down to Fort Lauderdale, we spent the night at Loews Beach Hotel in South Miami Beach. A 3 hour drive down the southern tip of Florida and you arrive in Key West. Spent the days just enjoying the sunshine, the wanderings and the tours. An amazing place to visit is the Dry Tortugas National Park. It is an island 70 miles west of Key West by boat. It is the home of Fort Jefferson, a former non-functional fort and prison (used during the Civil War).

    26 June
    Pool Party!!

As Chris and I were away for my birthday, and were going to be away for another friend’s birthday, and a friend from England was visiting, we decided to have a pool party and drink lots and swim lots. This was achieved!!

    28 June
We continued to help Mike and Tim move stuff today in preparation of their move out of there house. Chris was paged today, so we are heading off to whereever soon.

    29 June
We left today to Scottsbluff, Nebraska. I decided to head out with Chris, as we would get to see some of more of middle America. After travelling through Oklahoma, we stopped at Hays, Kansas. The hotel (a Holiday Inn proper) was horrible. Avoid this hotel if you ever end up in Hays, Kansas.

    30 June
We left Hays, Kansas continuing on our way Nebraska. About one hour after leaving, we were no longer in Kansas (anymore)! We got to Scottsbluff, Nebraska around 2pm local time (Mountain Time). The hotel is fine – the Lamplighter American Inn – and close to the mall – the happening place in Scottsbluff 🙂

  • Texas Tales – May 1999

    2 to 19 May
    Fairfax, Virginia

Chris was assigned to Fairfax, Virginia for storm duty. After driving through Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee (where we spent the night in the Knoxville, just on the other side of Chattanooga) and most of Virginia, we arrived in Fairfax, Virginia.

Fairfax is only 30 minutes away from Washin

  • Email Post Update

Sent to my update mailing list. Hi y’all 🙂 Well it’s been a while. Lots of things happening, which I guess is good … but it is making time go by. Friday saw the half way mark to my initial stay here (yep three months already). I guess I’ve seen a lot in the last three months. After spending three weeks in Fairfax, Virginia, I returned home to Dallas to meet up with a friend of mine – Jason (some of you might know him) – who was visiting here, then heading over to Hawaii to recover 🙂 It was quite amusing with the aussie doing the tour guide thing, but we managed to get most of what we had to do done :-)) Chris remained in Virginia for the time that Jason was here, however they managed to catch up the last night Jason was here. Two days later (after Jason left) we were jetting off to New Orleans for the Memorial Day weekend. It was heaps of fun – got drunk (though nothing near the Tram Car incident :-)) ). We returned on the Monday, and Chris was off again to Amarillo, Texas on the Tuesday. Talk about absence making the heart grow fonder 🙂 Anyway, tomorrow I am off to Amarillo to spend the rest of the time with him there. Amarillo is located right in the middle of the Texas panhandle (the square bit to the north of the state). It’s a country town / city. Cowboys and cows seem to be the main commodity up that way, according to Chris. I’m thinking Felicia, Mitzi and Bernadette visiting Broken Hill *evil grin* For those of you with memories, June marks the anniversary of my birth. Unfortunately I will not be resurrecting Miss Kitty for any celebrations. Chris and I are heading down to Key West, Florida for that week, so it should be a relaxing time in the sun, drinking copious amounts of fruity substances with large amounts of alcohol :-)) That will bring us almost to the end of June, and this means the fourth of July – my first here :-)) Well it’s late here … nearly 3am, so I should get some sleep so I can do all the things tomorrow before heading out to Amarillo :-)) Hope all is well and the weather is not too horrid in your part of the world (reference to Australian, specifically Melbourne, weather). Hugz, James

  • Texas Tales – April 1999

    April 4
Mike and Tim have taken off to Cancun, Mexico today for a week’s holiday (vacation) in the sun, and to wander through some Mexican ruins. Brian, Chris and I ventured down to Oaklawn today for Easter in the Park – where there was a dog show, symphonic music and lots of people showing as they wandered around. Oaklawn is the gay area within Dallas.

    April 9
Decided late tonight that I would drive down to Shreveport tomorrow to meet up with Chris.

    April 10
Headed down to Shreveport, Louisiana today. Hired a vehicle (a nice red Mercury Tracer {don’t ask!]), and drove around town for a little. Today I also became the proud parent of a Qualcomm QCP1929 Cell Phone (number available if you ask nicely).

    April 11
After a breakfast at IHOP (International House of Pancakes), we ventured to the tornado hit area of Shreveport. Seeing all the twisted metal and house contents strewn all over was eerie. Unfortunately, the area hit was a mobile home area (another area was hit) and the devastation was so concentrated – it was odd to look on either side of this area and see homes standing there as if nothing had happened. Chris took a few pictures, which will be uploaded soon.

After visiting the site, we drove over to Caddo Lake – the only natural lake in Texas. It is on the border of Texas and Louisiana, and provides a swamp-like image when visited. A quick drive further into Texas, and we are at the Lake O the Pines – where Chris’ family has a house boat. The country side is full of wild flowers: Indian, and ???? which is the state flower (it’s illegal to pick these flowers).

    April 12
Last day in Shreveport. Drove back to Dallas, enjoying the sun and the wind in the hair.

    April 17 to April 20
Refer to my Washington, DC page.

  • Our Ten-Year Anniversary

Daniel and I celebrated our tenth anniversary in November 1997. We had a bunch of friends helping us celebrate, and the sign that we are holding was made by our good friend Diane.
