I hope all had the opportunity to review the state of the union provided by the President last night.

I think President Bush highlighted something that all of us should hold close to our hearts. He stated that “I believe that God has planted in every heart the desire to live in freedom. And even when that desire is crushed by tyranny for decades, it will rise again.”

This statement is so true, however it is soon forgotten, when President Bush then goes on to address the issues of the “sanctity” of marriage, and reference to DOMA. “On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our Nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.”

I have to admit and say that I was suprised his references to this made it into his speech, but it does further highlight the influence that organizations like the Family Research Council have over this administration. RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie made the statement that if same-sex marriage was an election issue, it was because we (the gay community) made it one (link). I think President Bush's comments have provided evidence that it is this presidential candidate that has made it an election issue.
