Well it seems that some of you actually did miss my blogging entries. Of course, this begs the question, por que? Well, over the last few weeks, there has been a lot of movement in the Moss-Nunn household, and yesterday, much of the work that has been keeping my attention elsewhere “went live.”
After a great deal of consideration, Chris has decided to run for City Council, and my role was to ‘do up a website’ – which I am pleased to say is now 90% done.

Well this is the month of politics.
This coming Thursday (1/4), the new Congress (110th) convenes with a new Democratic leadership in both the House and the Senate (hands up if you will be tuned to C-SPAN at 12 Noon EST). I think this will be an exciting time for those involved in politics. Many believe the Democrats will come in wielding their batons and causing chaos, but I’m optimistic that there will be a calmness over the next two years that will bring together both sides of politics to create change for the better for this country.
Well that is my fantasy. Speaking of which, I am starting a Fantasy Congress League. It’s going to be named after my blog, as it seems an appropriate title for a political league. You will need to register first before you can join this league, and when you have done that, let me know so I can get you attached to the league. The premise of FC can be read here.
And then there is state politics. Next Tuesday (1/9), the Texas Legislature convenes the 80th Regular session. Members of the Texas House and Senate have been pre-filing bills since November 13, 2006 (as of the end of the year, 478 bills/resolutions have been filed in the House, and 150 bills/resolutions have been filed in the Senate).
During this next session, there will be bills introduced that affect us all (well, mostly those of you who read this blog), including topics relating to:
For those inclined, you can check out more details of subjects, or general groupings of bills for this upcoming session.

As the Congress returns this week, it appears that there are two Senate confirmation hearings that will receive a great deal of media attention.
First up is Robert Gates’ confirmation as the new Defense Secretary. Most analysts suggest that Gates will be confirmed easily, if not after a few hard questions from the (current) minority on the Senate Armed Services Committee. I was listening to the Diane Rehm show this morning on my way to work, and the consensus appeared to be that Rumsfeld has to go, and Gates is the person that will make that happen. The more I read about Gates, the more I’m confident that a new direction will in fact occur under his leadership.
The second confirmation hearing will be John Bolton’s position as Ambassador to the United Nations. Bolton was appointed by President Bush as a recess appointment, which means he has to be confirmed now, or never. Recess appointments expire at the beginning of new congressional sessions. Given it is unlikely that the Senate will confirm his appointment, it appears that Bolton will be out of that job in January 2007. Of course, one may speculate that he will be reappointed during the next recess of the Senate (which would keep him in the job until January 2009.)
Either way, both of these hearings will be interesting to watch given the recent election results.

The Associated Press is reporting that Jim Webb is going to take Virginia, after Senator Allen continues to trail by over 7,000 votes. It seems that Virginia has a very civilized elections process which was established by a bi-partisan elections administration, and in the last two recounts the amount of votes have not been enough to change the outcome.

Can someone say “damage control?” According to the BBC News:
President Bush says US Defense Secretary Donald Rumseld intends to resign following the mid-term election results.

UPDATE: It appears that President Bush has nominated Texas A&M President, Robert Gates to take over. With the (re)election of Daniel Ortega as president of Nicaragua, is this a move towards dealing “with this issue?” (Gates was head of the CIA during the last “issue” with Nicaragua.)

What a night! The Democrats have done very well in the House (at this point gaining 24 seats), and the Senate is down to three seats with a 49-48 split so far. The GOP needs one more seat to keep control of the Senate, and it’s looking like it will come down to just Virginia. The following is a snapshot of CNN’s results for this election as of this post.
