The Supremes are Awesome

Friday, June 27th, 2003 | Author: James

Today the Supreme Court announced their decision in the Texas Sodomy case, and it was good news for all men and women in the US. In a 6-3 decision, the court overturned the case of two gay men caught having sex while the police were investigating a false report of a burglary. The case got all the way to the highest court, and was considered back in March.

IN another decision (5-4), the court also overturned a previous decision of the court in the matter of Bowers v. Hardwick, which had previously sanctioned the laws of the remaining thirteen states that had sodomy laws.

The decisions were celebrated by many people across the nation. On the other side, the conservatives, lead by the radical religious bigots, are complaining that this is the downfall of American society. Same old tune, time to change the channel.

For anyone who wants to understand how unfair the situation was, you have to read the opinions (yes, all of them). Justice Kennedy wrote an extraordinary opinion (for the majority) explaining that the court had considered many similar cases (not dealing with homosexuals, but state law restricting the rights of people based on a class, or grouping), and had found these laws to violate the constitution. He cited many examples of case law to back this up, and presented an extremely focused document.

Justice Scalia on the other hand, wrote what one would expect from a conservative justice. He argued about the morality issue (arguing that states have the right to legislate morality involving one group of people), and suggested that the majority of his fellow members of the court had succumbed to the gay agenda!

It's great reading, and worth the time. A good day!

Blah-Day

Tuesday, June 24th, 2003 | Author: James

Today was a totally “blah” kind of day. I've been feeling de-energized all day, and just not happy. I didn't sleep well last night… some weird dreams, which is all I remember about them. I think an early night is in order … I always feel better when I sleep.

Mexican Starbux

Coffee was more subdued than normal. I think the fact that we were later may have contributed to this a little, or a lot. Still most of the regulars were there and some new faces - which is always nice!

We ate at Hacienda tonight after coffee, and bumped into a couple of friends from college. I like the fact that even in a city of over 53K people, you can still bump into people … like a small country town (which Frisco is far from being).

Almost finalized the Frisco Freedom Fest names from FPride, so should be able to get that off to the City on Monday. I hope we can all work around the same time, as this will help in keeping it fun for everyone.

Getting sleepy. Should take advantage of that and get an early night. Chris may be going to Shreveport tomorrow night, so we'll see if I'm in for a ultra-quiet night tomorrow.

Lazy Fridays … NOT!

Friday, June 20th, 2003 | Author: James

Well today has been a whirlwind of activity for me. Talk about lazy Fridays … or was that meant to be Mondays? Hopefully the weekend will settle down some - maybe with the rain, things will slow down.

One week to go until our friend from Oz is visiting. I am not in the shape I want to be for his visit, but I've been just a lazy so-and-so. I'm not as bad as I used to be… but I”m not as fabby as I'd like :-)

My email server has been down, so guess I'll have to wait to see what is waiting for me in my inbox when it's finished sorting itself out (with a little reboot help from me).

Had an SGA meeting this afternoon… not sure how effective it was … but I'm putting it down to the Friday blah's, rather than the enthusiasm of the group. Next week is retreat, so hopefully we'll be more energized then.

Coffee tonight … wonder how many will be there.

unscrewed?

Thursday, June 19th, 2003 | Author: James

Caught a new show on TechTV tonight - unscrewed, hosted by Martin Sargent. On tonight's show they talked about Elijah Wood on the Very, Very Gay site. Worth a look, but don't take it seriously. Got a nice link to StephTheGeek as well - a fellow LiveJournal user, and enjoyed reviewing her web page (some very kewl programming going on in that site).

Getting sleepy now, so going to bed.
