Highly Regarded Frisco Pride

September 23rd, 2006 § 1 comment § permalink

Chris mentioned to me that while he was searching the Internets that he found a reference to Frisco Pride. This is from a January 2005 post.

It’s also been highly progressive in several respects. The city was the first in the country whose green building ordinance mandated that all houses built within its borders be Energy Star compliant, as well as instituting several other programs designed to increase recycling and reduce waste. The city has purchased seven Toyota Prius hybrids for its city fleet and is planning to replace as many gasoline-only models as possible with hybrids. The local glbt association, Frisco Pride, is heavily-involved in community affairs and is one of the most highly-regarded groups in the city. (emphasis added by me)

I’ve no clue who this guy is that blogged about it, but how cool is that :-)

Maya Angelou

On Thursday evening, I sat in the UNT Colesium and listened to Dr. Maya Angelou. She spoke about Rainbow in the Clouds, and how each person shines as part of that rainbow. It was a good theme, and extremely uplifting and inspirational.

I thought her presentation was very good, and she is indeed a good story teller, mixing a history of her long life, the poetry that she has written and the people that she has met along on her life’s journey. I was suprised to learn about her youth, and through that understanding I discovered the draw that she has with a great many people. It’s not just about her words; it’s about her life. » Read the rest of this entry «

GIRL!

Today, while tapping out various things in a variety of formats, I have been listening to GIRL (Gay Internet Radio Live). Good music, but more interesting adverts! Like this one (a really gay version of Netflix).

Is MySpace really my space?

July 27th, 2006 § 0 comments § permalink

Monday while driving from Denton, I heard this commentary from this girl who, according to the NPR site:

is a high school student with an online journal. Her mother reads the journal — but Bly thinks she shouldn’t.

The piece covers a little about the phenomena of MySpace, and how parents are connecting online to this network to keep an eye on their kids (in particular, this girl’s mother).

As I was listening to this, I decided to jot myself a note (which I’ve just found) and blog about this. One, I applaud parents for getting involved with their child’s online activities; it’s what parents should do. Secondly, as you listen to this piece you realize the potential for parent’s to understand their children more by reading their online journals. And, C. (This is directed at the “youngings”) If you don’t want your parents to read your journal, don’t post them online for the world to see.

As my very wise friend Ian commented, it’s the equivalent of writing a journal, and then pasting the pages on your front door (his words were more descriptive, but it was the best a mind could do after consuming a number of glasses of wine).

Side note: I hadn’t heard that MySpace had overtaken Google and Yahoo as the most visited site (which apparently happened a week or so ago).

O, Superman

On June 30, our fearless crew headed to Superman Returns to find Brandon Routh flesh. Our intrepid reporters were disappointed with the brief moment where we got to see, but we took that moment and remembered it fondly … well until the next piece of flesh came our way. The movie itself was great (to me). I don’t have as strong a recollection of the earlier movies (a la Christopher Reeve) as some of my friends, and I think (in hindsight) that this may not have shrouded my view as much as others. I really liked the story line, and especially enjoyed the background that was presented earlier in the film. I loved the way Superman flew – a small thing, but to me probably one of the most noticeable differences to the earlier movies. Story line was good, although a little bit predictable – it was Superman afterall.

On a side night, I just finished watching a show on Lifetime Original called Lovespring International, starring Jack Plotnick. Think a-s-t-r-o-p-h-y-s-i-c-i-s-t! (Update: Eric McCormack is an Executive Producer on this show.)

music ramblings

February 15th, 2006 § 0 comments § permalink

I was going to post this as a comment on Chris's blog, but after tapping it out for a while, I realized it was worthy (?) of my own blog (so I'll just post a link on his).

Hmmm… I'm now just getting around to actually read this post from Chris.

For those that don't know me, I consider music as just noise.  It's good noise most of the time, but I don't have this drive to understand it like Chris and some of my other friends.  Chris has this amazing talent of memorizing not only the words of songs, but many of the other details as well, like the year it was released, if it is a remake, etc.  He also has this fine tuned ear that actually enables him to identify a song within the first few bars.  I don't have that ability.

One of the things that I am sure frustrates Chris is when we are driving in the car, and he suggests I pick the music.  I just pick something, anything.  As to me, it's noise. I can often tune out music, or perhaps I blend it into my brain as just part of the background noise. I guess I can just turn that part of the noise I hear down, so I don't get distracted from other “noises”, like chatting with friends in the car, or whereever.

Now there are some artists that I really enjoy listening to, but even they get to sit on the side of the road from time to time.  Many friends would remember how passionate I was about Shirley Bassey when I first came here.  I still enjoy her, but I don't listen to her all that often.  I can listen to Lighthouse Family all day, especially “High” (Postcards from Heaven) - and everytime I hear this, I think of driving along the Great Ocean Road, and having Lasik surgery.

There are certain songs which I tag as memorable, and normally these have a specific reason for being on “that” list.  Like Chris, Indigo's “Perfect Day” has some good memories from New Orleans, in September 1998. It also is one of those bitter-sweet songs, because of the connection to that song with my ex, Daniel.  Cher's “Believe” is another one of those songs (bitter-sweet).  Both of these bring back floods of memories whenever I hear them.

Of course, some may think based on my reactions to some music that I don't enjoy certain songs, or artists.  This isn't the case (in most cases).  Most of the time, it's just noise.

As my SOCI professor says, “long story, short” – it's a good post, and worth reading.
