Speed

September 9th, 2006

I was catching up on blogs today, and found this very cool speed test for the Internets (well the one I’m currently using). Thanks to Chad Fox for the link. That is 6,111 kb/s download. About adequate for all the downloads that venture into this house.

Last month, I blogged about how the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Deleting Online Predators Act. It appears that online opposition to this has been growing, and a newish site has been created to combat this legislation.

The Save Your Space site aims to “show the public, the media and the U.S. government the importance and amazing power of social networking, blogging and chat room sites.”

They have started an online petition, and want to get 1 million signatures before September 4, 2006. So far, they have 3,261 signatures, so they have a long way to go. Add yours if you care enough.

Blog Surfing

August 5th, 2006

Earlier this week while looking at other people’s blogs, I found this link (courtesy of danah @ apophenia). It provides an insight to how different drugs affect our behaviours and our abilities to function, through the use of animated mice. It really is a very cool tool if you want to understand what actually happens to the brain when drugs are used.

Here is another cool tool created for the folks that use OS X. (SIGH)

WikiMania Conference 2006 kicked off yesterday, and here is a good recap of Day 1.

Rolling Stone’s most recent cover story is titled “The Worst President in History?” Guess who this might be about? (Source: Chris)

LJ Xfer Discovery

June 6th, 2006

I discovered today, that when I transferred all my blog posts over from LiveJournal to this new blog tool, that the private messages all became public. Never fear, I’ve gone through and passworded the posts, so you can see it exists, but can’t read it. I’m not sure if this is how I’m going to handle blog posts like this, and I’ve discovered that one of the downfalls of the new blog tool, is that unlike LJ, I can’t have groups and then choose to display certain posts to just those groups. I guess that is where the password protects come in.

Men Want Pussy?

May 5th, 2006

My friend Damir shared this with me. It’s a little dated (as in, October 2005), but it was an incredible read and inspiring!

I’m intrigued enough to now go exploring the rest of this blog.

LJ -> WP??

March 19th, 2006

I’m trying to decide if I want to keep my blog here at LiveJournal, or move it over to my domain (I’d used WordPress I think for the blog part of my site). My renewal is not due until July, but I need to start planning it; as it won’t be easy moving over two years of blog entries (not to mention all the broken links with the cross-referencing). What to do…

Cool Email of the Week

February 15th, 2006

Earlier this week, I received an email from James Nunn.  The subject of the email was “Feedback: our names” and I'm thinking to myself, hmmm… more viagra adverts (coming through my feedback tool on my website).  I was surprised to open the email and find this:

Dear James,

Hi. This is a bit cheeky but I was wondering if you would do me a huge favour. could you put a link or a note on your site to my site? I am an illustrator and designer and lately I've had a lot of interest from the states and it crossed my mind that they'd have to guess what my web address was since I have only just started putting my url on the books I design. Predictably this happened after I did the book that many americans now own: Eats Shoots and Leaves.

If you don't want to or don't think it's appropriate then don't worry, really. You seem to have a lot on your plate right now anyway so I do wish you all the best with the lawsuit etc. whatever you decide you seem like a nice guy, which is always a bonus in a namesake!

At any rate I hope you enjoy the site www.jamesnunn.co.uk.

very best wishes

James

How cool. A namesake! So I did as I was asked, and there on my front page of my webpage is a link to “The Other James Nunn.” What makes this even more incredible is that I actually own that book, and it's been on my reading list for a few months now.  Now I have more reason to read it, if only to admire the pictures!
