The Beauty Queen of Leenane

Chris and I went to see the latest production of the Quad C TheatreThe Beauty Queen of Leenane.  From the program:

Set in the mountains of Ireland, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of a plain and lonely woman, and her manipulative ageing mother, whose interference in her daughter’s first and potentially last loving relationship sets in motion a train of events that is as gothically funny as it is horrific. As the play develops, the two women lock horns until scores are settled.

“With dark and mysterious plot twists, The Beauty Queen of Leenane will have audiences laughing aloud one moment and covering their mouths in stunned silence the next.” (New York Post)

I did laugh, I was stunned. The actress who play Maureen (Julie Painter) did a remarkable job (as did the rest of the cast), but most impressive was the strong Irish accent that all the cast kept going throughout the production.
